About
Barb Lorenz, LBSW, is one of the oncology social workers at the Helen G. Nassif Community Cancer Center. She graduated from Mount Mercy University in Cedar Rapids with her bachelor’s degree in Social Work.
Barb chose to go into her field knowing she wanted to help others, but not exactly sure how. She decided to go into social work and early on, through interning, and found that she was very passionate about working with elderly and persons with disabilities. From there she has further developed her interests in the social work field.
When asked what qualities best describe the care she gives, Barb said her strongest qualities include “quickly engaging or connecting with them on a personal level, with a caring, holistic approach.” If a patient tells Barb there is a need, she will do everything she can to make she that need is met.
The thing that motivates her each day is first and foremost her family. “They are my main focus, and they come first,” said Barbara. She also strives to learn at least one new thing every day, “I feel that can be a successful/complete day.” Barb has the desire to do well in everything she does each day.
The most important message Barb would like her patients to know is that they are some of the strongest people she knows. She explained, “They give me the strength to continue to be helpful whenever possible. Their determination to make it through treatment is beyond what I can imagine.” She said that one day she hopes she can take on the difficult situations as courageously as her patients do.
In her free time Barb enjoys doing anything outdoors, walking and boating are two of her favorite hobbies.
