Sayde Alexandrescu, MSES, MSYT, RYT, ACSM-CEP, exercise program specialist at the Nassif Community Cancer Center, discusses what patients need to know about our upcoming six-week workshop, Intro to Pelvic Floor Health. View our full schedule of classes and events here >>
What is Introduction to Pelvic Floor Health (PFH)?
Intro to PFH will explore the dysfunctions in our pelvic floor in an effort to understand where we can improve. It will be different for each person. Some are looking for movements that are safe for physical limitations, while others are hoping to decrease incontinence of urine, bowel or gas. Some want to understand how to breathe with full breath capacity and some are seeking to gain strength. Anyone inquiring is welcome.
What can patients expect at a Pelvic Floor Health class?
Education. The workshop includes a slideshow presentation of musculature and skeleton, seated and/or supine movements, guided exercise and breathing practices to move back to improved function of the pelvic floor.
In what ways can Pelvic Floor Health benefit patients currently in treatment, as well as cancer survivors?
A patient’s PFH can be affected by treatment, surgery, excessive sitting, medication and age. Beginning to practice exercise for the full pelvic floor helps to identify changes in one area through treatment. Following treatment, this workshop helps bring us back to wholeness by educating on the variety of contributors to dysfunction.
What would you say to someone who is hesitant to try Pelvic Floor Health classes?
I am available to answer all questions or speak to concerns at the “What Is Pelvic Floor Health?” Q&A session on Tuesday, October 21 from 11:15-11:45 a.m. (no registration needed). I am also happy to discuss via email or phone.
What is your goal when working with patients in the Intro to Pelvic Floor Health class?
To provide safe, effective practices to improve function and create an awareness of that which is within our control.
When are the Intro to Pelvic Floor classes being held?
- Q&A session: Tues., Oct. 21 from 11:15-11:45 a.m.
- Classes: Nov. 4, 18, 25 and Dec. 2, 9, 16 from 4-4:45 p.m.
